For some people art is holding a brush with paint on it, and gently moving the brush on a piece of paper. If that’s the case of you, then I guess that you never heard of the art style “Action Painting”. That for guarantee is not the “old fashioned”, “normal” type of “painting”.
Action painting is so much more. It is a pretty new acknowledged art style, but actually it’s not that new either, because what many people don’t know is that it was something that our last generations were loving to do too. Representative for action painting is the dynamic, loose, rapid or forceful handling of paints. For example Jackson Pollock didn’t just used a simple brush to put his paint onto the canvas. Pollock used things like wood pieces, scrapers and other things. But the biggest thing Pollock was known for is probably his style of Drip-Painting. Which is when you are as the name already tells you, using your paint brush or tube to drip paint on the art piece. The painters in action painting don’t have any organization at all, and they also don’t have a concrete vision either. Artists just spill the paint wherever they want to. It actually has a reason, because the thinkable consciousness is like turned off for that moment. Which is exchanged with the Dadaism/ or Dada-activity. Composition, paint, form and the base were seen secondarily. Other ideas were created through the very funky way of painting either, such as the art styles `Informel´ and `Tachisme´. Now I talked about the art style itself, but I think you still don’t really know what it is though, or how you can see if something is based on action painting. Action painting is often made by the drip technique, but that’s not it. About two years ago, I met an artist that was specialized on action painting and he showed me a lot of techniques. The most fascinating ones for me, were for example the technique with the remote-controlled car, or the one with the drill machine. You are probably asking yourself right now, how you can paint something with a car, the answer is easy. Choose a color of your choice, paint the tires with it and then just start. Its a lot of fun, but make sure that it’s ok when paint will spill on the ground. I also liked the technique with the drill machine, when you put a paint brush where you usually put a nail in. That will create marvelous and unbelievable unique pieces of art.
I already told you a little bit about Jackson Pollock (1912 – 1956). Jackson was like the primary representative of action painting. Which really made a movement in art, particularly in the European art style.
I hope I chose a topic you enjoyed. See you next time!
